Another victory in A League

Moynalvey made the long journey to Drumbaragh worth their while when notching up another victory in Division 3 of the A league on Tuesday evening July 6th.

Drumbaragh 2-8 Moynalvey 2-11
With a strong wind behind their backs it was the home side who settled quickest pointing twice in the opening three minutes. Moynalvey opened their account in the 4th minute when a surging run forward from centre back John Flannery resulted in a free kick, which John Donoghue duly slotted over. Using the wind to their advantage, Drumbaragh opened up a three point lead after only 10 minutes. A Daniel Treacy effort for Moynalvey mid-way through the half reduced the deficit to two. Two more Drumbaragh scores were countered by Moynalvey’s David Durkan and David Donoghue, leaving the home side with a two point advantage at the interval on a score line of 0-6 to 0-4.

Moynalvey, with the aid of the wind behind them in the second period had levelled matters almost immediately after the break, with points from John Donoghue and David Durkan. The first goal of the evening arrived in the 7th minute of the half, when a poor Drumbaragh clearance resulted in the Moynalvey attackers setting up Ray Ryan to finish to the net from close range. Thirty seconds later the men in maroon and white increased their lead further when Dan Treacy added a second point to his tally. However, Drumbaragh gave Moynalvey a taste of their own medicine, when also hitting 1-1 in the space of two minutes leaving the sides tied on 1-7 apiece. The sides traded points, before David Donoghue gave Moynalvey a slender one point lead with 10 minutes remaining. However the Drums once again had the lead when a speculative effort at a point from distance resulted in the ball hitting the upright and somehow the swirling wind deceived Moynalvey keeper Brian Reilly to find its way to the back of the net.

With four minutes remaining on the clock, Moynalvey regained their one point advantage when Dan Treacy burst past three defenders to fire low to the net. Moynalvey finished the stronger of the two sides and despite a spate of wayward efforts at the posts, came away three point victors with John Donoghue and Willie Byrne completing the scoring to leave the end score reading 2-11 to 2-8. Moynalvey’s best performances were turned in by William Mahady, David Donoghue and top scorer Daniel Treacy.
