Goal power downs the Tones

Having lost out to a late Duleek/Bellewstown goal in round one of the 2014 Division 2 B League, Moynalvey picked up their first two points of the campaign with a six point victory over Wolfe Tones at Dunganny on Tuesday night March 25th.

Moynalvey 3-8 Wolfe Tones 0-11

With the Tones holding a slight half time advantage on a score line of 0-8 to 0-7, it was Moynalvey’s greater second half goal scoring power which saw them register their first victory of the 2014 B League campaign.

Wolfe Tones opened the scoring as early as 40 seconds into the game when their captain and commander in chief Alan Fox split the uprights. The sides were level two minutes later when Moynalvey’s Shane Lenehan opened his account for the evening. The opening quarter remained a keenly fought affair with nothing between the sides as the score lines suggests, 0-4 apiece after 13 minutes of play, with Moynalvey’s scores during this period coming from Ken Hyland and a brace from Dan Treacy. With 20 minutes of play gone the Tones held a double scores lead of 0-8 to 0-4, however despite dominating possession for most of the second quarter Wolfe Tones found themselves ahead at the break by just the minimum. Having fallen four points in arrears, two points from Moynalvey’s Ciaran Ennis and a point from Ken Hyland left just a point between the sides at the break, 0-8 to 0-7.

Six minutes after the restart Tones’ centre half back Aodan McKeown surged forward to point and two minutes later Tones’ added another point to extend their advantage to three points, 0-10 to 0-7. The next score raised the first green flag of the game when following a goal mouth scramble Moynalvey midfielder Phillip Garvey fired to the back of the Tones net from a seemingly impossible angle to regain parity between the sides once again, 0-10 to 1-7 after 46 minutes. Moynalvey took the lead for the 1st time in the game with 11 minutes remaining when Shane Lenehan poked the ball to the net after good work from Daniel Treacy in the build up. An Alan Fox converted free for the Tones in the 53rd minute left just a single kick of the ball between the sides, 2-8 to 0-11, but Moynalvey’s win was made safe in the final minute when Lenehan grabbed his second goal and Moynalvey’s third goal of the night, leaving the men in maroon and white run out winners on a 3-8 to 0-11 score line.

Best for Moynalvey were David Kane, Anthony Brien, Dan Treacy, Shane Lenehan and Ken Hyland.

Moynalvey: R. Ryan, D. Durkan, D. Kane, S. Whyte, D. Branigan, C. McCabe, A. Brien, P. Garvey (1-1), B. Conneely, D. Treacy (0-2), W. Harnan, S. Lenehan (2-1), J. Munnelly, K. Hyland (0-2), C. Ennis (0-2).
