Third league defeat for Moynalvey

E-mail Print PDF

Moynalvey endured their third defeat of the A league campaign when going down to Gaeil Colmcille by 7 points in Kells on Tuesday evening 4th August.

.

Gaeil Colmcille 3-10 Moynalvey 1-9

.

In the opening half, conditions were tough for the visiting side as they faced into a strong breeze and weren’t helped by the concession of an early goal in the 3rd minute. Gaeil Colmcille tagged on a further point before Moynalvey eventually opened their account in the 6th minute through a Daniel Treacy point. Over the remainder of the half Moynalvey could only manage three further points, a Stephen Donoghue effort & two John Donoghue frees.

.

While Moynalvey trailed the home side on a score of 1-7 to 0-4 at the break, the advantage of the wind at their backs allowed them to close the gap to 4 points, through early second half points from David Donoghue & Treacy. Moynalvey worked hard to close the margin further with an inspirational point from Stephen Donoghue & another converted free from John Donoghue, but a brace of points from the town side meant the elusive 4 points still remained between the sides. However in the 46th minute a some what fortuitous goal from distance by John Donoghue left only a kick of the ball between the teams with the score reading 1-9 to 1-8 at this stage. But Moynalvey failed to gain on this momentum, adding only one further point from the boot of substitute Peter Durnin. In the end a combination of the concession of two soft goals in the last 10 minutes & the lack of spark in front of goals at the other end cost the men in maroon dearly.
