Moynalvey went down to St. Peter’s Dunboyne by two points in this penultimate Round Div. 1 A League played at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Tuesday evening 3rd July.

Moynalvey 2-8
St. Peter’s Dunboyne 2-10

Despite playing the majority of the second half with a two man advantage Moynalvey failed to reel in their opponents, with Dunboyne leading by eight points when losing two players to dismissals, having led by four at the break, to hold on for a two point win.

Dunboyne took an early three point lead with points from inside forwards Robbie McCarthy and Donal Lenihan, before Moynalvey midfielder John Donoghue opened his side’s account in the 8th minute.

A goal from Cillian O’Sullivan in the 17th minute drew the sides level for the first time. Points from David McLoughlin and O’Sullivan put the home side two points up, but the sides were level again on the half hour mark 1-3 to 0-6.

A break in play which saw the inured Adam Murphy leave the field dented Moynalvey’s momentum, with the drive swinging the way of the visitors who clocked up 1-1 in the four minutes additional injury time, with the goal coming from Robbie McCarthy to lead by four at the break 1-7 to 1-3.

The first two points of the second half went the way of Dunboyne extending their lead to six, with Moynalvey responding with a Cillian O’Sullivan free before Gavin McCoy struck for Dunboyne’s second goal eight minutes into the half leaving eight between the sides 2-9 to 1-4.

Moynalvey were then handed a life line as indiscipline saw Dunboyne have two players given their marching orders within minutes of each other.

With six minutes remaining Moynalvey had reduced the deficit to two points, 2-9 to 2-7, with points from O’Sullivan and Donal Smith and a goal from Brian Harnan.

However, despite dominating possession in the last quarter Moynalvey struggled to break through for enough scores as Dunboyne packed their defence. A break up the field saw Robbie McCarthy relieve the pressure with a score in the 56th minute. The game’s final score was a Cillian O’Sullivan free which left the full time score read 2-10 to 2-8 in favour of Dunboyne.

Currently lingering in the relegation zone, Moynalvey travel to Paddy O’Brien Park to take on O’Mahonys in the final round game next Monday.

The significance of last night’s loss was soon forgotten as hours after the game news broke of the death of Ronan Kelly, brother of Moynalvey players James & Padraig who had togged out in last night’s game.
Our sympathies go to the Kelly family at this sad time.
RIP Ronan, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
