An impressive Moynalvey display saw them overcome visitors Navan O’Mahony’s on a 2-13 to 0-7 score line in round 8 of the A league played at Kimore Park Moynalvey on Thursday evening May 4th.

Moynalvey 2-13 Navan O’Mahony’s 0-7

Moynalvey recorded a much needed win with a high intensity performance which saw them limit their opponents to five points from play, while 2-12 of Moynalvey’s 2-13 total came from play.

It’s not everyday Navan O’Mahony’s are scoreless in the 20th minute of a game, but that was the case here as the home side had ran up a 1-5 to 0-00 score lead early on. The game’s first score was a green flag, with the in form David McLoughlin rattling the back of O’Mahony’s ‘keeper Marcas Brennan’s net in the 6th minute. McLoughlin then turned provider when picking out Shane Lenehan with a cross field ball with Lenehan firing over. Three more McLoughin points and a Fearghal McCabe point made up the remainder of Moynalvey’s early 1-5 tally.

Darragh Smyth eventually opened O’Mahony’s account in the 20th minute, which was followed two minutes later by a Conor Murphy point and a Shane Gillespie free in injury time, left the half time score 1-5 to 0-3 in favour of Moynalvey.

Moynalvey introduced county player Cillian O’Sullivan at half time, replacing the injured Darren Brennan. O’Sullivan had an immediate impact as he sent over the first of his four second half points just two minutes after entering the fray. McLoughlin scored his fourth point of the evening in the 36th minute when a John Donoghue ’45 was dropping short and was claimed by McLoughlin and blasted high over the crossbar when under pressure. Cormac McGuinness replied for the visitors four minutes later.

Just as Navan O’Mahony’s were building a little momentum, two incidents had a major bearing on the game. Navan O’Mahonys were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute, their effort rebounded off the post and within 90 seconds a brilliant run forward from full back Conor Harnan set up Shane Lenehan to blast past Marcas Brennan for Moynalvey’s second goal, leaving it 2-7 to 0-4 after 52 minutes.

Three O’Sullivan points, with O’Mahony’s responding through two Shane Gillespie points and another from Sean Smyth left the score reading 2-11 to 0-7 after 60 minutes. Three injury time points, one from Shane Lenehan and two more from David McLoughlin saw the full time score read 2-13 to 0-7 in favour of Darren Fay’s charges.

While this was a fine all round team display, Moynalvey’s stand out performers were Ray Ryan, Conor Harnan, Dan Treacy, Shane Lenehan and top scorer David McLoughlin.

Moynalvey: Ray Ryan, Scott Tuite, Conor Harnan, Brian O’Reilly, Stephen Donoghue, Darren Brennan, Darragh Branigan, John Donoghue, Eamon Walsh, Sean Duggan, Daniel Treacy, Donal Smith, David McLoughlin (1-6, 1f), Fearghal McCabe (0-1), Shane Lenehan (1-2).
Subs: Cillian O’Sullivan (0-4) for Brennan, Conor Shirren for Duggan.
