Moynalvey suffered their third A League loss on the trot when going down to Cortown on a 1-11 to 0-8 score line in Cortown on Thursday evening July 31st.

Cortown 1-11 Moynalvey 0-8

Cortown entered this back league fixture looking for a much needed win to ensure their Division 2 status and the fact Moynalvey played out the second 30 minutes with 14 men aided their cause significantly.

It was visitors Moynalvey who got off to the better start, racking up a three point lead with points from Donal Smith, Barry O’Keeffe and Shane Lenihan, before Cortown opened their account in the 5th minute with a free from Ryan O’Rourke. Moynalvey failed to score between the 4th and 29th minutes, with the home side reeling off six unanswered points in this period. Four converted frees from Cortown stalwart Glen Loughran and a point apiece for Ryan O’Rourke and Brian Casserly accounted for these scores. Following a brief goal mouth scuffle in the 29th minute Moynalvey wing half forward Paul Conneely was sent off, leaving Moynalvey down to 14 men for the second half. After the goal mouth altercation Moynalvey full forward pointed the resulting free and Stephen Donoghue pointed in the final minute to leave two between the sides at the break on a 0-7 to 0-5 score line.

Six minutes into the second period fourteen men Moynalvey had the deficit back to a point with a Barry O’Keeffe free after Brian Conneely was bundled over. A couple of Cortown points were followed by a brace from Moynalvey’s Anthony Forde leaving just minimum between the sides once again after 47 minutes of play. However Forde’s points proved to be Moynalvey’s last of the game and Cortown’s much needed win was guaranteed in the 56th minute meant a high ball in wasn’t dealt with by the Moynalvey defence and the ball was punched to the empty net raising the only green flag of the game.

Moynalvey: Ollie Regan, Anthony Brien, David Kane, Fearghal McCabe, Brian Harnan, Stephen Donoghue (0-1), Johnny Carey, Donal Smith (0-1), Brian Conneely, Daniel Treacy, Anthony Forde (0-2), Paul Conneely, Shane Lenihan (0-1), Barry O’Keeffe (0-3), Luke Duffy.
Subs: Eoghan Mitchell for Duffy, Sean Duggan for Carey.
