Junior C team fail to progress from group

Moynalvey’s second string paid the price for a poor start & concluded their 2009 Junior C campaign with a disapointing defeat against Na Fianna in this game played in Summerhill on Tuesday evening August 11th.
Na Fianna flew out of the traps opening the Moynalvey defence at will in the opening 10 minutes registering the opening 3 points, with Moynalvey lucky to be not further behind as the second came from a penalty kick. Moynalvey eventually found their shooting boots in the 9th minute with a free kick & added a second 4 minutes later when the ball was recycled back to P.J Walsh who slotted over from close range. However as Moynalvey were building up momentum, Na Fianna hit them with a sucker punch of a goal in the 19th minute. Na Fianna proceeded to add to their advantage rattling off 0-5 before the break in response to two points from Walsh for Moynalvey.
While the half time score read 1-9 to 0-4 in favour of the Enfield/Baconstown combination & Moynalvey suffering the loss of Shane Collins & Peter Durnin through inury in the first period, they failed to lie down & dug deep early in the second half scoring the first 3 points, the first a massive effort from the centre of the field from Paul Garvey, the second a brilliant effort from an acute angle by Dan Treacy & the third a free from William Harnan. They cut the deficit to 4 in the 46th minute after Harnan had added another free along with another Treacy effort. While Moynalvey owned possession for the majority of the second period this was as close as they got to their opponents as Na Fianna kicked on to add the final two scores of the game leaving the final score reading 1-12 to 0-9.
Moynalvey will sit out the last round of games in the group with a bye knowing progression to the knockout stages is no longer possible, meanwhile the players will now have a chance to try and stake a place in the first team’s plans for the remainder of their campaign.
