Slane progress at Moynalvey's expense

Moynalvey’s second string bowed out of the Junior ‘B’ Football Championship at the Quarter Final stage when going down 2-7 to 1-6 at the hands of Slane at Walterstown on Sunday afternoon August 23rd.

Moynalvey 1-6 Slane 2-7

With playing conditions being atrocious, high scoring was never going to on the cards with the first half of this contest yielding just six scores. It was Slane who troubled the Walterstown score keeper’s first when Donal Carolan pointed for the game’s opening score in the 2nd minute. Moynalvey’s first score came in the sixth minute when Ciaran Ennis converted a free after Brian O’Reilly was fouled.

Moynalvey took the lead for the first and only time when on the quarter hour mark O’Reilly was once again fouled prior to Ennis slotting over a second free, leaving it 0-2 to 0-1. Ennis’ second free would prove to be Moynalvey’s final score of the first half, with Slane bagging a further 2-1 before the half time whistle, their goal’s coming from Alan Harding & Jim Marry, leaving it 2-2 to 0-2 at the break.

Within three minutes of the restart Slane had extended their advantage to eight points with county minor Podge McGowan and Donal Carolan pointing. A third Ennis free once again after an infringement on Brian O’Reilly and a converted penalty by Ennis three minutes later narrowed the margin between the sides to four, 2-4 to 1-3 after 41 minutes of play.

A Dermot Lynch point for Slane broke Moynalvey’s scoring sequence before an Ennis free was followed by a point from Moynalvey county minor Conor Harnan impressing on his adult football debut and another from substitute Sean Duggan had the deficit down to two with 11 minutes remaining, 2-5 to 1-9.

Any hopes of Moynalvey completing their comeback were dashed when they were reduced to 13 men with the dismissals of Anthony Brien and Paul Weldon in the 55th & 57th minutes respectively. Numerical advantage stood to Slane in the final few minutes with points from Eanna Mooney & Podge McGowan rounding off their four point win on a 2-7 to 1-6 score line to see the Boynesiders progress to the semi final of the competition.

Best for Moynalvey were Conor Harnan, Robbie Kiernan, Brian O’Reilly and substitute Johnny Carey.

Moynalvey: Conor Egan, Robbie Kiernan, David Kane, Conor Harnan (0-1), Anthony Brien, Padraig Donoghue, James Reilly, Brian Conneely, Paul Weldon, Barry O’Keeffe, Ciaran Ennis(1-3, 1p, 3f), James Kelly, Brian O’Reilly, Ciaran Collins, David Durkan.
Subs: Sean Duggan for Durkan, Johnny Carey for O’Keeffe, Eoghan Mitchell for Conneely.
