Lack of goals deny Moynalvey

In a competitive Div. 3 B League game played in atrocious weather conditions it was home side St. Peter’s Dunboyne who ran out eight point winners in this back fixture played on Thursday night 16th July.

St. Peter’s Dunboyne 2-14 Moynalvey 0-12

Despite the heavy rain and slippy underfoot conditions this game provided for an entertaining affair, with Dunboyne running out eight point winners, however Moynalvey can feel aggrieved that the margin at the final whistle may have been closer, being denied 4/5 goal chances by saves/blocks/woodwork throughout the hour.

St. Peters opened the scoring with a brace of points in the opening six minutes, with Moynalvey’s Ciaran Ennis levelling matters with a brace of his own, the first from play in the 7th minute and the second from a placed ball three minutes later.

The first of Dunboyne’s goals arrived in the 11th minute when a ball played across the Moynalvey backline was let slip, leaving the Dunboyne forward a clean run at goal finishing soccer style past Moynalvey goalkeeper Conor Egan. Dunboyne built on this advantage adding two more points in the 15th and 19th minute leaving it 1-5 to 0-2.

Moynalvey replied with three points in a row, two Ennis frees and James O’Neill’s first point of the evening cutting the deficit back to two points. O’Neill’s point in the 23rd minute proved to be Moynalvey’s final score of the first half, although the post did deny Colm O’Connor a goal in the 28th minute. The home side registered a further 0-4 before the half time whistle to lead by double scores on a 1-9 to 0-6 score line at the break.

Another Dunboyne free extended their advantage within sixty seconds of the restart. Ennis scored his second point from play in the 3rd minute of the half before two goal chances went amiss, the first when Ennis was blocked down and the second when substitute Johnny Carey was also denied. Three Moynalvey points, two from Ennis and a second of the night from James O’Neill in response to another Dunboyne free left the goal between the sides, 1-11 to 0-11 after 18 minutes of the second period.

Three Dunboyne points left six between the sides with five minutes remaining. Moynalvey’s Ennis converted his side’s final score in the 56th minute, leaving five between them, 1-14 to 0-12. Dunboyne’s winning margin was enhanced further when a point attempt fell short and was flicked to Moynalvey keeper Conor Egan’s net by a Dunboyne substitute in the 58th minute.

Two further goal chances fell Moynalvey’s way in the final two minutes, both to Robert Lawless however it seemed the visitors were destined not to find the net as the first attempt was blocked and the second was fisted onto the crossbar.

Moynalvey: Conor Egan, Robbie Kiernan, David Kane, Eoghan Mitchell, Gary Crowley, Anthony Brien, Shane Browne, Brian Conneely, Robert Lawless, William Harnan, Ciaran Ennis (0-8, 6f), Colm O’Connor (0-2), James O’Neill (0-2), Ciaran Collins, Shaun Dering.
