Two From Two in A League

Moynalvey made it two wins from two in the A League when overcoming Simonstown Gaels by the minimum margin at Kiltale on Wednesday 22nd July.

Moynalvey 3-7
Simonstown Gaels 1-12

With Moynalvey’s pitch out of action due to construction works our sister club Kiltale very kindly played host to this encounter, with many of our dual players no strangers to the pitch.

Simonstown opened the scoring with two Padraig McKeever frees in the 1st and 3rd minutes. Moynalvey’s first score was a simple palmed finish by Adam Murphy to the Simonstown net in the 5th minute following a good build up to take the lead for the first time, one that they wouldn’t be headed again.

Sixty seconds later Moynalvey had the ball in the Simonstown net for a second time, this time county player Cillian O’Sullivan with an excellent finish past Robert Burlingham, leaving it 2-0 to 0-2 to the ‘home’ side after six minutes.

Three McKeever frees and a point from another county player Sean Tobin brought the sides level for the first time in the 13th minute. Just before the first water break Cillian O’Sullivan put Moynalvey back in front with a free, making it 2-1 to 0-6.

Points from David McLoughlin and Cillian O’Sullivan extended Moynalvey’s advantage out to three, before Simonstown regained parity with a converted penalty levelling matters for a second time. Cillian O’Sullivan tagged on another point leaving Moynalvey one point up at half time, 2-4 to 1-6.

Mark O’Sullivan and Padraig McKeever traded frees (2) before the game’s fourth goal came in the 51st minute when Shane Lenehan slotted home giving Moynalvey a four point advantage, 3-6 to 1-8.

Come the 58th minute the visitors levelled with four unanswered points, three McKeever frees and a point from play from Ben Hoey leaving the score 3-6 to 1-12. Just as it looked like Simonstown were to take a point from the game, a late pointed free from Cillian O’Sullivan earned the one point win for Moynalvey.

Points from play were at a premium, with just two points from play for either side in the hour, so plenty to improve on for both sides before the SFC 1st round on Friday 31st July.

Coming out the right side of a tough encounter Moynalvey will be happy to pick up the win heading for their SFC round 1 clash with neighbours Summerhill having played most of the second half with 14 men and 13 men for a short period due to overlapping of sin binnings.
