Two early Fiachra Ward goals paved the way for a Wolfe Tones victory over Moynalvey on a 2-13 to 0-9 score line in this opening round tie of Group A of the Hoganstand.com Senior Football Championship played at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening 11th April.

Moynalvey 0-9 Wolfe Tones 2-13

With both sides missing their main scorers, Wolfe Tones Cian Ward and Moynalvey Mark O’Sullivan, it was the Tones’ who coped better in the absence of their talisman as Ward’s younger brother Fiachra bagged the games two goals in the first quarter.

Last year’s semi-finalists were first to trouble the score keeper opening the scoring in the 3rd minute, with Moynalvey wing back David Reilly replying six minutes later. By the time Moynalvey would register their next score in the 22nd minute from their top scorer David McLoughlin, Ward’s two goals along with a further three Tones’ points left nine points between the sides on a 2-4 to 0-1 score line. Both sides added a brace of points before the half time whistle with both of Moynalvey’s scores coming from McLoughlin, leaving the score board reading 2-6 to 0-4 at the break.

Tones’ midfielder Niall O’Reilly pointed the opening score of the second period, before McLoughlin and John Donoghue pointed for Moynalvey in the 2nd and 8th minutes of the half. Wolfe Tones other midfielder Alan Callaghan also got in on the scoring when sending over a fine point from the right wing in the 39th minute, leaving the score 2-8 to 0-6. Four further Tones’ points left it 2-12 to 0-7 after 49 minutes. The final 11 minutes saw Moynalvey reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of substitute Eamonn Walsh, while they also outscored Wolfe Tones three points to one, to leave the final score reading 2-13 to 0-9.

Former Moynalvey player Barry O’Keeffe will have plenty to work on to improve with his side prior to their second round local derby clash with the 2011 and 2013 Keegan Cup champions Summerhill in a fortnights time.

Moynalvey: Ray Ryan, Darren Brennan, Cathal McCabe, Darragh Branigan, David Donoghue, Dan Treacy, David Reilly (0-1), Padraic Harnan, Donal Smith, Anthony Forde, John Donoghue (0-2), Stephen Donoghue, David McLoughlin (0-6, 2f) Shane Lenehan, James Weldon.
Subs: Eamonn Walsh for Smith, James O’Neill for Lenehan, William Harnan for Lenehan.
