Moynalvey secured their fifth win of the 2014 Div. 2 A league campaign with a five point victory over visitors St. Colmcilles on a 0-14 to 0-9 score line at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Tuesday evening June 24th.

Moynalvey 0-14 St. Colmcilles 0-9

Moynalvey put their poor performance of last Sundays Feis Cup tie with neighbours Summerhill behind them when getting the better of East Meath outfit St. Colmcilles in the League on Tuesday night. The first half of this contest was a low scoring affair with just nine scores registered, with Moynalvey leading by double scores 0-6 to 0-3 at the break, by the time the full time whistle arrived Moynalvey would have eight different scorers.

Moynalvey full forward James Weldon recorded the opening score of the game after just 30 seconds, which was followed 90 seconds later by a Ciaran Ennis free after David Donoghue had been fouled. Come the 6th minute the sides were level with the ‘Cilles firing over a brace of points leaving it 0-2 apiece. A minute later Moynalvey wing half forward Daniel Treacy split the uprights to regain the lead. The next score of the game didn’t arrive until the 17th minute when St. Colmcilles’ county Junior footballer and centre half forward Ben Brennan clipped over a free to restore parity between the sides. Sixty seconds later St. Colmcilles were unlucky not to have taken the lead when they hit the bottom of the Moynalvey upright with an effort at goal. The ‘Cilles third point from the boot of Brennan would prove to be their last of the opening period. The home side went on to add a further three points courtesy of James Weldon, Barry O’Keeffe and an effort from county Senior panelist Anthony Forde just on the stroke of half time, leaving the score reading 0-6 to 0-3 in favour of the home side at the interval.

Moynalvey continued where they left off at the first half, adding four points, three from James Weldon, two from frees and one from play along with a John Donoghue effort, while keeping their opponents at bay in the third quarter. St. Colmcilles first score of the second half came in the 48th minute from a free, which was quickly followed by another a minute later, leaving it 0-10 to 0-5. A converted free from the games top scorer  James Weldon free in the 51st minute followed by points from substitutes William Harnan and Brian Conneely, with a Colmcilles’ effort sandwiched in between gave the home side a healthy 0-14 to 0-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Three late points from frees in additional time for the men from the East coast left the score reading 0-14 to 0-9 when referee Declan Brown blew the full time whistle.

Best for the winners were: Fearghal McCabe, Paul Weldon, Brian Harnan, David Donoghue and James Weldon.
