Late goal sees Moynalvey progress in Feis Cup

Moynalvey escaped from Grangegodden with a last gasp victory over Gaeil Colmcille in the Feis Cup with a goal in the 4th minute of additional injury time securing a one point victory over the host side on a 1-10 to 0-12 score line on Wednesday evening May 28th.

Gaeil Colmcille 0-12 Moynalvey 1-10

Having suffered a hammering at the hands of the same opposition in the Feis Cup at the same venue last year, Moynalvey reversed last year’s result to progress to the next round of this year’s Feis Cup against neighbours Summerhill. With little between the sides for the majority of this contest, it was Gaeil Colmcille who looked like they were heading for victory as they held a four point advantage with a minute of normal time remaining. However due to a bad injury to a Gaeil Colmcille player early in the second half several minutes of additional injury time were added, in which Moynalvey snatched a late act of robbery.

After four minutes of play with the sides level 0-1 apiece Gaeil Colmcille had the perfect opportunity to take an early upper hand when awarded a penalty kick, but Moynalvey ‘keeper Ray Ryan expertly saved to maintain parity between the sides. The teams were level for the second and last time in the 17th minute after Moynalvey’s Ciaran Ennis and Gaeil Colmcille’s full forward traded scores. The Kells men took the lead for the first time in the 18th minute through their centre forward and doubled their lead two minutes later with a converted free. Moynalvey’s Shane Lenihan reduced the deficit to the minimum when he split the uprights in the 24th minute, only for the host side to restore the two point margin between the sides sixty seconds later. Ryan made the second of an excellent string of saves to deny Gaeil Colmcille a goal in the 26th minute which resulted in a 45’, which sailed over the black spot from the boot of Gaeil Colmcille’s full forward giving the host side a three point advantage. Ennis converted a free kick for Moynalvey in the 28th minute, with Ryan once again denying the Kells men in the final minute of the half to maintain his clean sheet and leave the half time score reading 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of Gaeil Colmcille.

Two minutes after the restart just a point separated the teams when Moynalvey centre half back Anthony Forde fired over. A brace of Gaeil Colmcillle points left three between the sides once again nine minutes into the half, but by the 48th minute a brace from Moynalvey’s Shane Lenihan left a solitary point between the teams, 0-8 to 0-7. Ryan finger tipped over another save from a Kells goal effort in the 53rd minute leaving three between the teams again, before Cathal Sheridan fired over a Moynalvey free with five minutes of normal time remaining. A brace of Gaeil Colmcille’s points left four between the sides and looked to have secured victory for the town side in the 59th minute. However visiting side Moynalvey snatched victory in additional injury time with a Sheridan free and substitute Johnny Carey became the hero of the hour as he drew a volley on a loose ball in the Gaeil Colmcille area to raise the only green flag with the final act of the game, handing Moynalvey victory on a 1-10 to 0-12 score line.

Moynalvey: Ray Ryan, Darren Brennan, Cathal McCabe, Darragh Branigan, Anthony Brien, Anthony Forde (0-1), Fearghal McCabe, James Weldon (0-1), Stephen Donoghue, Shane Lenihan (0-3), John Donoghue, David Reilly, Ciaran Ennnis (0-2), Cathal Sheridan (0-3), Daniel Treacy. Sub: Johnny Carey (1-0) for Treacy
