Moynalvey rounded off their 2013 Div. 2 ‘A’ League campaign with a seven point victory over St. Michaels at Carlanstown on Wednesday evening July 24th.

In their final league game of the year Moynalvey halted their recent run of league defeats and also in the process brought the curtain down on St. Michaels run of league wins. Right from the off Moynalvey were in command of this game with midfielder John Donoghue beginning the scoring in the 3rd minute, which was the start of a 0-8 to 0-3 first half lead for the visitors. Moynalvey for the first time this year fielded with the 2012 Meath young footballer of the year Cillian O’Sullivan following his stint in Australia and was warmly welcomed back by his team mates and sent over a point in the 7th minute to double Moynalvey’s advantage. Moynalvey led 0-4 to 0-00 after 15 minutes following points from Ciaran Ennis and Barry O’Keeffe, before the home side eventually troubled the score board in the 16th minute with a converted free from Ben Farrell. Ronan Lynch reduced the deficit to 2 points on 19 minutes but the visitors hit back and registered 0-3 without replyRonan Lynch pointed for Michaels in the 19th minute, reducing the margin between the sides to two points. Three Moynalvey points from Cathal McCabe, Stephen Donoghue and a Ciaran Ennis ’45 pushed their lead to five points with five minutes of the first half remaining. Michaels’ David Lynch exchanged a point with Moynalvey’s James Weldon before the half time whistle, leaving the men in maroon and white five points to the good at the break on a 0-8 to 0-3 score line.
Nine minutes after the restart only a single score separated the sides as Michaels hit two unanswered points leaving three points between the teams on a 0-8 to 0-5 score line. The next ten minutes proved to be a barren spell for the home side as they failed to raise a flag of any colour, while a brace of points from Moynalvey’s Barry O’Keeffe pushed their advantage to five points on the 48th minute mark. Ronan Lynch tapped over for Michaels in the 50th minute, before substitute Anthony Brien put the game beyond Michaels reach when fisting home to an open net after being set up by the unselfish Cillian O’Sullivan. As the first half had finished, St. Michaels’ David Lynch and Moynalvey’s James Weldon traded scores in the final six minutes, leaving Moynalvey seven point winners on a 1-11 to 0-7 score line.
